Our Cairns Carer Support Groups offers a supportive environment where people have the opportunity to talk about their feelings, help explore alternative ways of coping, offer support to other group members, or to simply listen and observe. Support groups are also a valuable means of informing carers of Arafmi services and resources that are available to assist their caring role.

Mental Health First Aid (2 days)

The workshop provides you with the skills to support a friend, family member or co-worker experiencing Mental distress or illness.Around 1 in 5 Australian adults experience a common mental illness each year. Completing an MHFA course gives you the skills and confidence to support a friend, family member or co-worker. Mental Health First Aid courses are run in over 25 countries and over 3 million people have been trained worldwide. Be part of our growing community of mental health first aidersThis event runs over two days on the 10 & 11 August from 9am - 4:30pm each day.Tea (black and herbal), milk and coffee will be provided for the two days. However, please bring your own lunch.This workshop is free for people who care for a friend or family member with mental health needs. Numbers are limited, preference is given to Mental Health Carers and Arafmi Volunteers.

The workshop provides carers with communication skills to build a strong and respectful relationship with the person they support.The workshop provides carers with an opportunity to increase their awareness of how people communicate and what skills are needed at different times to build a strong and respectful relationship with the person they support. A range of communication strategies will be explored to build carers confidence and skills and assist them to improve relationships now and in the future. This workshop is based on the L.E.A.P. communication strategy.This information session is designed specifically for people who care for a friend or family member with mental health needs.

Developing a Portable Summary (Online)

This information session is designed specifically for people who care for a friend or family member with mental health needs.Developing a Portable Summary session you will be provided with a template to use to collate relevant details that can be needed by clinicians, service providers and yourself. Recording information centrally can save retelling information over and over and ensure accurate details about a person’s history, needs and supports are maintained.

When applying for NDIS funding, a statement from a carer can provide valuable information to assist someone to successfully gain access.Developing a Carer Statement session will cover useful information to include in a carer statement and different formats that can used.This information session is designed specifically for people who care for a friend or family member with mental health needs.
